MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Butler improved to 5-1 overall with a 5-2 win over Ashland Blazer Monday afternoon.
Shane Marushi's Tomcats got off to the fast start that they needed, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. But as it has been in the early going of the season, the ability to hang on and close out the win became a challenge.
Cayden Borchers (1-0) came on in relief of starter Mason Reckner in the 4th inning and struck out four, while relinquishing just two hits in the win for Butler.
"Cayden was very impressive in relief to earn the win," said Butler skipper Trent Dues.
Jayden Watkins went 2-for-3 with a double for the Aviators, while Russ Stratman went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Max Rubins added two hits and an RBI. Sam Mitchell (1 RBI) and Josh Morris each contributed a hit for the purple and gold.
The win marks the end of a great first day for Butler, as the Aviators got 2-0 with two games left at the beach.
Butler will be tested on Tuesday with a matchup against a deep Herndon squad and a very talented Boyd County team on Thursday.
